Reports:
Tim follows the growing emergence of chain stores and restaurants in Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue Area. What does this trend mean for students, residents and local businesses?
Get the full storyI really don’t think that chain restaurants will necessarily put local eateries out of business. It all comes down to how the local businesses market themselves. Mario’s e.g. has built strong customer loyalty over the years and has a distinctive character (food, setting etc). All it has to do is promote that in the right way.
Chipotle or Quizno on the other hand, can offer students faster meal preparation, potentially better pricing as well as a unique experience on Telegraph. Its unlikely that they’d be allowed to innovate their menu just for Berkeley (something that Mario’s could easily do if it wanted!) as it is probably dictated by headquarters.
The idea that the “big bad chain restaurant” puts little stores out of business is a myth. Its all a matter of giving the customer what he or she really wants.. and a bit of marketing strategy.
TIM! so many great interviews! it’s really sad how the tradition of having no-chains-only-locals is crumbling away with the barging in of huge chains… i wish berkeley will keep the chains out some how and bring the locals in!! ;] keep berkeley clean! hahahaaa
