PM Ariel Sharon’s departure from Israeli politics leaves his newly formed centrist party (Kadima) with an uncertain future. Though it is currently being led by deputy PM Ehud Olmert, there are fears that his departure could signal the rise of more conservative elements of Israeli politics thereby jeopardizing progress made in the mid-east peace process.
This contrasts against recent elections in Palestine where the militant wing Hamas is participating in the political process, running against Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement. Some analysts view their participation as an expression of criticism against Fatah, while others see it as the beginnings of something similar to the IRA & Sinn Fein.
