Story
Some of the newest endangered species are in the form of technology, and America’s pay phones are the latest dying breed. A New Hampshire town without cell phone reception is fighting to save the only pay phone it has, one that is sometimes even used by law enforcement. Though the town faces challenges from profit-driven telephone companies who threaten removal, many citizens are pushing to pass a state public interest law protecting the phones. Social issues also polarize their dominant use, leaving many to wonder if they are lifelines that we need, or just unnecessary and crime-inviting devices.
