Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that would prohibit the sale of sexually explicit, violent games to anyone under the age of 18. The videogame production industry thought their worries were over after agreeing to have ratings administered by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) on videogame packaging to better inform parents of their purchase. After being in tact for almost ten years, family groups like the California Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) were not appeased by the ESRB system and were lobbying for more strenuous restrictions. U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher categorized violent media as “small effect size” in an analysis of risk factors of youth violence, and identified 27 menacing issues rated higher than violent videogames, mostly dealing with school and family relations. Are videogames really that bad for America’s youth or is this a political ploy to get parent groups on Governor Schwarzenegger’s side?
